Eligibility 

• This is an adult degree completion program intended for non-traditional students. To qualify you must meet one of the following characteristics:
  • Age 24 or older as of the first day of the term in which you intend to enroll
  • Veteran or active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Financially self-supporting, or
  • Legal dependents other than a spouse
• Minimum of 2.5 in previous college coursework
• Students can choose from a variety of majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, select College of Business majors and majors in Leadership & Management, Managerial Economics, or Criminal Justice.
• Students can design their own major with assistance from the department.
• There is no limit on the time it takes to complete the degree.
• 90 overall credits can transfer and can include military ACE credit, life/work portfolio credit and CLEP credits.

Cumulative GPA

• Minimum of 3.0 required, including all courses taken at other colleges besides GCC. Applicants who earned a GPA lower than 3.0 may be considered with additional documentation. 

Acceptance Status

• AAS (Associate of Applied Science) in Nursing.
• Students may transfer up to 90 credits to UMW including nursing courses, prerequisites, and general education courses.
• Statistics is required.
• 30 credits must be taken at UMW.
• Provide current, unencumbered RN license.
• Only C's and above will transfer. 

Concurrent Enrollment and Guaranteed Admission

• Students who have started GCC nursing classes may take up to three RN-BSN classes at UMW during the summer term and have guaranteed admission to UMW.  
• Students must complete a letter of intent for concurrent enrollment and guaranteed admission.
• Thirty credits must be completed at UMW for degree completion.  The other 90 are a combination of GCC nursing class and general education requirements.  Students can complete the general education requirements at Germanna.  Make an appointment with a GCC transfer advisor for guidance on these classes.

Acceptance Status

• Associates of Arts (AA), Associate of Arts & Science (AA&S) and Associate of Science (AS) degrees
• Completion of the transfer degree will satisfy all general education requirements at UMW with the exception of the second language.
• Although not required for transfer admission, UMW requires a language through the 201 level for students to graduate. UMW accepts ASL coursework through the 201 level but does not offer these courses; students can take ASL classes at Germanna. The language requirement can be satisfied if the student has taken through level IV in High School.
• GAA students will receive a waiver for all other lower level general education courses, with the exception of: 1 Digital Intensive requirement, 1 Diverse and Global Perspectives course, 1 After Mary Washington requirement, and 1 Beyond the Classroom
• Courses for transfer must be earned with a C or higher.
• UMW offers transfer scholarships and the Tuition Promise.

• Students can check Transfer Virginia for course equivalencies and transfer guides. 

Letter of Intent Required

• To obtain: type “GAA letter of intent” in UMW’s website search menu after a minimum of 45 transferable college credits.
• The letter of intent needs to be signed the GCC transfer advisor. Students can drop off the letter of intent in the Career & Transfer Office or email it to careerandtransfer@germanna.edu from their VCCS email account.  

Highlights: Co-enrollment

• Germanna students who intend to complete the bachelor's degree at UMW can take up to 5 classes at UMW while a student at Germanna.
• The classes must apply to the student's transferable associate degree plan.
• Students must have completed 15 credits at Germanna with a 3.0 grade point average.
