Recent changes to the RN to BSN program were put into place for fall 2017:
- Statistics is no longer a prerequisite to the RN to BSN program. Statistics will now be offered as part of the RN to BSN program.
- The sequence of courses for the RN to BSN program has changed creating more flexibility in progressing through the RN to BSN program of study.
- The option of taking up to 3 courses for graduate study still exists for those who are considering graduate school in the future.
- Potential students may take up to three courses in the RN to BSN program before officially applying. Doing so can lighten your load once admitted and help with tuition by decreasing overall costs/semester.
- Beginning fall 2019, microbiology will be required as a prerequisite. This date was determined based on the first class to graduate from the new VCCS concept based curriculum (spring 2019).
The University of Virginia BSN Program requires 120 credits for graduation. These credits are accrued in
the following manner:
- 48 general education credits, which can be taken at your local community college
- 42 nursing credits, transferred in from your Associates Degree / Diploma program
- 30 RN to BSN credits, taken at the University of Virginia
General education requirements (48 credits)
Students are required to satisfactorily complete 48 credits in the following general education courses
prior to enrollment.
- English composition - 3 credits - required for students except for those who are exempt. You are exempt if you scored 750 or higher on the SAT II Subject Test in Writing or 5 on the English AP test. (Students who are exempt from English Composition must take an additional 3 credit elective.) If you are attending a college with a two-semester composition course, you must complete both semesters to satisfy this requirement. For example, in the Virginia Community College System, we require ENG 111 and ENG 112.
- Natural science and math - 12 credits - Anatomy & Physiology is required (if your college has a two-semester sequence, you must complete both semesters). Microbiology will be required beginning in the fall of 2019. Other acceptable courses include mathematics, chemistry, physics, genetics, environmental science, geology, and ecology.
- Social science and history - 9 credits - Your choice. Acceptable courses include history, government, psychology, sociology, economics, western civilization, political science, and anthropology. Special note: while you are required to take lifespan development, it cannot count towards your social science credits, because it is part of the 42 credits awarded for your previous nursing courses.
- Humanities and fine arts - 9 credits - Your choice. Acceptable courses include philosophy, ethics, art, religion, music, drama, and foreign languages.
- Electives – 12 or more credits to total 48 credits. Your choice. Note: two courses (up to 5 credits) in skills courses such as studio art or music performance may be counted toward these elective credit requirements. Only 2 Physical Education (PE) credits can be accepted for elective transfer credit.
