Letter From the President

Dear Germanna Graduates,

Today marks both an ending and a beginning. Today is the day you complete your time with us and begin a new and exciting phase in your life.

Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.

The Star-Spangled Banner

O say, can you see,
By the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
Through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare,
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

Madison Eileen Bean is enrolled in Germanna Community College’s Behavioral Health Technician program and will graduate this summer with an associate degree in general studies. During her time at Germanna, she gained valuable hands-on experience through an internship with the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board in the emergency services department, strengthening her skills in crisis response, communication and client support.

Madison graduated early from Stafford High School during her junior year with a 4.0 GPA, demonstrating strong academic dedication from a young age. At Germanna, she has continued to excel while balancing coursework, internship responsibilities and professional development.

Passionate about mental health advocacy, Madison plans to continue her education and pursue a career in social work, where she hopes to support individuals during their most vulnerable moments. Known for her compassion, strong work ethic and commitment to helping others, she looks forward to using her training and experience to make a meaningful impact in her community.

LaRai Diamond-Fortune

Lima Waziri’s journey to Germanna Community College is defined by persistence and a deep commitment to education.

In Afghanistan, Lima was in third grade when the Taliban burned down her village school, and by fifth grade her next school was closed as well. Determined to continue learning, she moved to Kabul, where she graduated at the top of her class. Out of 187,000 applicants, she earned one of the highest scores in the country and received a full scholarship to the nation’s most prestigious university, becoming the first woman in her family to attend college.

While studying law, Lima became the first woman in her country to teach public speaking. With the money she earned, she built a library in her home so girls in her community could share books and continue their education, while also tutoring girls who had fled rural areas.

In 2021, when the Taliban banned women from education, Lima was forced to leave her law degree and country behind and begin again in the United States. Guided by her curiosity about how the world works, she shifted from law to engineering.

At Germanna, Lima is pursuing mechanical and aerospace engineering along with a CADD certificate. She tutors math, physics, engineering and writing and has represented Germanna at the Virginia General Assembly. She received the Emerging Engineering Leaders Scholarship and has been selected for opportunities including a United Nations initiative on sustainable alternatives to plastic and a National Science Foundation program in quantum computing.

Lima plans to transfer to Virginia Tech to pursue a double major in aerospace and ocean engineering. Her dream is to become an astronaut and build a STEM-focused school for girls in Afghanistan. She believes education is not only a personal right, but a powerful way to uplift humanity.

Attendance at the College’s commencement is voluntary. This program, therefore, lists the names of all those eligible to participate in this commencement, not just those attending the ceremony. The appearance of a name in this program is not necessarily a valid indication of graduation. The College reserves the right to withdraw or add names.

Future Educators Academy & Early College

Established in 2015, Germanna’s Early College program allows high school students to earn an associate degree alongside their high school diploma. Graduates complete a transferable degree, enabling them to pursue a bachelor’s degree in less time and at a lower cost. Cohorts are offered at the Fredericksburg Area Campus and the Daniel Technology Center.

In fall 2024, Germanna launched its first lab school, the Future Educators Academy at the Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper. In partnership with Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock, and Fauquier County Public Schools, the academy addresses regional teacher shortages by providing an accelerated pathway into the education field. Students graduate with an associate degree in education alongside their high school diploma.

We proudly recognize the first graduates of the Future Educators Academy, as well as Germanna’s 10th cohort of Early College graduates, for their commitment to these rigorous programs.

Academic Regalia

The academic costume has its origins in the universities of the Middle Ages. The warm gown and hood were useful in unheated buildings. Even after the Civil War, students at most American colleges and universities wore caps and gowns while attending classes. These costumes varied greatly until the design was standardized in 1894.
