How does dual enrollment work?

  • Eligibility: High school and home school students who meet specific criteria can participate in dual enrollment. These criteria typically include qualifying test scores, GPA thresholds, and other academic requirements.
  • Course Completion: Students take college-level courses alongside their regular high school curriculum. These courses appear on both the student’s high school transcript and their Germanna transcript.
  • Credit Transfer: The credits earned through dual enrollment are generally accepted by four-year colleges and universities in the Commonwealth. However, it’s essential for students to verify credit transfer policies with the admissions offices of their intended transfer institutions.

I knew that I didn’t want to only attend my high school full time, and I wanted the opportunity to get ahead and earn my associate degree before I moved on to a four-year university.

Why choose Germanna?

  • Affordability: Germanna offers affordable classes taught by fully credentialed college faculty. Students can earn college credit based on their academic performance throughout the semester, rather than relying solely on one test.
  • Transferable Credits: Through programs like the University Core General Studies (UCGS) and our Transfer Passport courses, students can complete up to one year of transferable bachelor’s degree coursework while still in high school.
  • Early Exposure: Dual enrollment provides early exposure to the rigors of college-level courses, allowing students to adapt and prepare for their future academic endeavors.

Types of Dual Enrollment at Germanna

  • Traditional Dual Enrollment: Students take classes at their respective high schools and earn concurrent college credits. This pathway depends on the availability of courses offered at select high schools.
  • Independent Dual Enrollment (IDE): High school and home school students who plan to take classes outside of the regular high school day at Germanna fall into this category.

Dual Enrollment programs at Germanna are more than just an opportunity for students to get ahead—they are a transformative experience that opens doors to new possibilities. Students like Ava Conway, who graduated summa cum laude with an associate degree while still in high school, exemplify the success and potential of these programs. Ava’s journey through the Germanna Scholars Early College program highlights the dedication and support our faculty and staff provide to ensure student success. Her achievements, including numerous accolades and participation in prestigious events, demonstrate the high level of academic and extracurricular opportunities available to our Dual Enrollment students. Germanna is shaping the future of our students and our community.
