Letter From the President

September 2026

Our students are back in the classroom, and the energy across Germanna’s campuses is unmistakable. Hallways are crowded. Desks are filled.

There is also a feeling of hope. Of change. Of promise.

Germanna is a place where people come to transform their lives. They don’t all share the same goals or backgrounds. They are at different stages of their lives. But each of them believes that education can open the door to something more.

From my office windows, I have a front-row seat to that hope. Over the last few months, I've watched prospective students come and go: mothers pushing strollers or balancing babies on their hips looking for a better future, workers in uniforms looking to level up.

Sometimes, they arrive looking tired or frustrated or unsure. But when they leave, something has changed. They have a plan. A plan for what comes next. And it has the potential to change their lives.

That is the power of Germanna: creating greater opportunities and greater impact for our students, their families, and our community.

About Dr. Tashika Griffith

Prior to being appointed as Germanna’s seventh permanent president, Dr. Griffith served as Provost and Chief Campus Officer, Clearwater Campus at St. Petersburg State College, St. Petersburg, Florida, a position she held since February 2022.

She has been affiliated with St. Petersburg College since 2016 and served as Interim Dean of the College of Education, Assistant Provost and Provost of the college’s Downtown and Midtown Centers. Dr. Griffith previously served as Associate Dean of Students at University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Miami, FL, Director of the office of Multicultural Affairs at University of Scranton, PA, and in the Career and Multicultural Center at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA. In addition to 16 years in adjunct teaching positions at a number of colleges and universities, Dr. Griffith also taught public high school and served in the university police department at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL. She currently serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership.

Dr. Griffith earned a Professional Certificate at Harvard University, a B.A. at Florida Atlantic University, a Master’s degree at Virginia Tech, and her Ed.D. at Northeastern University, Boston, MA.

August 2026

Every August, thousands of students begin a new chapter at Germanna. They come to us with different experiences, different goals, and different dreams, but they all share something in common: the courage to invest in their future.

I'm also beginning a new chapter as I prepare for my first full academic year as Germanna's president. This summer, I had the opportunity to learn alongside new college presidents during an inspiring higher education leadership seminar. I was reminded that learning is a lifelong journey and that there is always value in listening, growing, and embracing new perspectives.

That same spirit of curiosity and growth is at the heart of Germanna.

Every new semester reminds us that education changes lives. Every student who walks through our doors brings new potential—for themselves, their families, and our region.

Thank you for being part of the Germanna community. Together, we believe in the power of education to create greater opportunities and greater impact. As we welcome another academic year, we remain focused on the people at the heart of everything we do.

One of the things I enjoy most as president of Germanna is the opportunity to have meaningful conversations with people across our community. Whether with students, faculty and staff, community partners, or those who want to learn more about our college, every conversation offers a chance to listen, learn, and build stronger connections.

This month, I joined Joey LoMonaco, editor of The Fredericksburg Free Press, for an episode of Coffee Shop Talk. We talked about my journey from growing up in the Bahamas to leading Germanna, the changing landscape of higher education, and the role community colleges play in transforming lives.

I also participated in the Free Exchange panel hosted by the Fredericksburg Free Press, where community leaders discussed the future of education and the opportunities and challenges ahead. These conversations bring together different perspectives while reinforcing our shared commitment to student success.

Our Open House welcomed nearly 300 prospective students and their families, giving them the opportunity to explore programs, ask questions, and connect with faculty and staff. Every conversation helped someone better understand what Germanna has to offer—and perhaps even imagine a future they hadn't considered before.

Meaningful conversations don't always happen in formal meetings or on stage. Sometimes they happen over a cup of coffee, in a classroom hallway, or during a campus visit. Each one helps us better understand the needs of our students and community while strengthening the relationships that move Germanna forward. Together, those conversations create greater opportunities and greater impact for our students and our region.

First 100 Days

During my first 100 days as president of Germanna Community College, I had the privilege of meeting with students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, and community partners across our region. These conversations deepened my appreciation for the people, values, and aspirations that make Germanna such a special place.

Listening was my highest priority as I began this role. What I heard was clear: our students are ambitious, our employees are deeply committed to their success, and our community believes in the important role Germanna plays in creating opportunity throughout our region.

Those insights are helping shape Vision 2030, our strategic planning process and roadmap for the future. As we continue this work, your voice remains essential.
