A state program run by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services (VDVS) and State Council of Higher
Education for Virginia (SCHEV)

Tuition Assistance

A federal military benefit given to members who are currently within a duty contract and are dependent on the member’s branch and leadership

To use VA Education Benefits, the service member or dependent must:

  1. Create an account on VA.gov and apply for education benefits
  2. Request a Certificate of Eligibility (COE), which outlines the specific benefits they are approved for
  3. Submit a copy of the COE to the Military-Connected Student Center

Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program

This program provides education at Virginia public colleges and universities to qualified spouses and children of military service members who were killed, missing, taken prisoner, or severely disabled (90–100% service-connected) due to military service.

The program covers tuition and mandatory fees for eligible students and may also include a stipend for books and supplies, depending on state funding.

Who Qualifies

Spouses and children (ages 16–29) of qualifying veterans.

Residency: The veteran was a Virginia resident at time of entry into service, or has been a current VA resident for at least 5 years before applying.

Coverage Tiers

  • Tier 1: Tuition and mandatory fees only
  • Tier 2: Tuition, fees, plus a book stipend, based on state funding approval

Tuition Assistance

This Department of Defense program helps active-duty servicemembers—plus National Guard and Reserve members on active duty—pay for voluntary off-duty education, such as college degrees or certifications.

Eligibility: Active-duty members of all U.S. military branches, and National Guard & Reserve members on active duty. Branch-specific service requirements apply.

*Some branches have credit hour limits (e.g. Army: 16–18 hrs/year). School must be DoD MOU-approved.

Key Requirements:

  1. Meet with your Education Services Officer (ESO)
  2. Complete required training (e.g. ArmyIgnitED intro)
  3. Submit course requests as part of an approved degree/certificate program
