Is social media a threat to democracy?

The University of Mary Washington and Germanna Community College, in partnership with the VA250 Commission, Braver Angels, and the College Debates & Discourse (CD&D) Alliance, will host a Public Square Debate on Wednesday, March 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Using the Braver Angels format, participants will engage in civil discourse on the resolution, Is social media a threat to democracy? Four speakers—two supporting and two opposing—will offer prepared remarks, followed by audience questions and brief statements. No advance preparation is required.

This free event is open to students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and community members. The debate will last approximately 90 minutes, moderated by a professional CD&D facilitator. Light refreshments will be provided.

Registration is open until 6 p.m. on March 11.
