On July 29, 2024, the Office of Equity Advancement kicked off its annual Smart Start: First-Gen program, giving students who are the first in their families to attend college an introduction to the college atmosphere. The program hosted 34 students, kickstarting their college futures and setting them up for success.

Held annually, Smart Start: First-Gen is a summer bridge program that gives first-generation students the opportunity to take a free college course, land a free laptop, and experience fun and engaging educational activities. Aries Wilson, Coordinator of Equity Advancement, taught this year’s introductory course, which covered topics including goal setting, time management, and academic planning.

I had the pleasure of teaching our Smart Start First-Gen SDV 100 course. I am delighted to report that it was a great success, and I’m particularly proud of the students' active participation and willingness to share their experiences. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and it was evident that they formed strong connections with their peers during the course.
