On Saturday, September 2, we were proud to announce the winners of our Jackie Robinson Writing Contest. In partnership with the Fredericksburg Nationals baseball team, the Jackie Robinson Writing Contest and Scholarship Fund annually awards five winners with a $1,042 scholarship. This year’s winners included Kaileen Francois, Michelle Wu, DJ Johns, and Marlon Vales.

The partnership between Germanna and the Fredericksburg Nationals, established in 2020, highlights the history of baseball in Fredericksburg while providing educational opportunities, scholarships, and exhibitions for Germanna and local students. With Germanna’s dedication to removing barriers that may prevent economically disadvantaged and minority populations from achieving higher education, the partnership includes the Jackie Robinson Writing Contest and Scholarship Fund. This contest gives local high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to write a 500-word essay about how they have used one of Robinson’s nine values that he noted were key to his success. Five winners are selected each year.

The partnership also gives game tickets to Germanna students, hosts free baseball clinics at the stadium, and allows Germanna students to narrate video segments on Fredericksburg baseball history. Fundraising for Germanna’s Gladys P. Todd Academy is also included in the partnership, giving local first-generation college students the opportunity to graduate from high school with an associate degree.

We are proud to offer our students new and exciting learning opportunities through our local partnerships.
