Story by: Sydney Gaines

When Keith King steps into his classroom at Germanna Community College, he isn’t just an instructor—he’s a mentor, a guide, and a reflection of the possibilities that exist beyond the classroom walls. His journey from military service to the world of information technology and, ultimately, to teaching is one rooted in a deep commitment to giving back to his community.

Professor King’s career began in the U.S. Army, where he served as an information technology soldier for six years. His military experience laid the foundation for his expertise in I.T., shaping him into the professional he is today. After leaving the service, he transitioned into federal contracting, working for both large and small companies that further refined his skills.

However, as he advanced in his career, one thought remained constant: the desire to give back.

“Giving back was always something I wanted to do,” Professor King shares. “All of my previous roles have given me so much knowledge and experience, and I’m grateful to be able to transfer some of that knowledge to students and give back.”

For him, teaching wasn’t always in the plan. But as he gained more experience, Professor King found himself drawn to the mentorship aspect. He began as an adjunct instructor at Georgetown University, his alma mater, before transitioning to Germanna in the summer of 2022. For him, the decision to teach at a community college was personal.

I always tell students that I was a non-traditional student. I didn’t go to college straight out of high school. I was a working individual and decided to go into the military. And I didn’t pursue my bachelor’s degree until after my service.

Using his 9/11 GI Bill, Professor King earned his undergraduate degree at DeVry University in Crystal City while juggling work and family life. Determined to further his education, he pursued a master’s degree at Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies.

Professor King’s involvement with Germanna extends beyond the classroom. When his former employer, GCubed, Inc., partnered with the College, he and CEO Vernon Green were eager to contribute. They saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world industry demands.

“Sometimes, the academic world for I.T. doesn’t keep up with where the industry is,” Professor King explains. “But we have to find that balance in the curriculum. One of the immediate things Vernon and I wanted to do was have that blend happen.”

In his classes, Professor King advocates for industry-recognized credentials, helping students secure entry-level I.T. positions. His current full-time role as Assistant Director of I.T. for the Stafford County Government has even led to hiring Germanna students, reinforcing his commitment to workforce development.

Beyond technical skills, Professor King is deeply invested in supporting students from all backgrounds. He understands that many Germanna students face challenges beyond the classroom—whether they come from single-parent households or lack a strong support system. He strives to be a mentor and provide guidance, particularly for minority students in underrepresented fields.

In the I.T. space, there’s not a lot of people who look like us and have the same cultural background. When I have minority students, I always tell them to look at me as an example. I don’t tout my long resume—but I tell them to check my LinkedIn and see the things I’ve accomplished. Because whatever I’ve accomplished, they can accomplish.

For Professor King, teaching isn’t just about imparting knowledge; it’s about opening doors and inspiring confidence. He lives by the philosophy of “reach one, teach one,” ensuring that every student he encounters leaves his class knowing they have the potential to succeed.

“Regardless of different obstacles that may be in the road or the things going on around us, I stress the importance of staying on the course,” he says. “When you’re in roles and spaces where your demographic is underrepresented, it’s that much more satisfying. You then position yourself to become the person who individuals come to and seek advice from. That’s what makes it all rewarding.”

Through his work at Germanna, Professor King is not just teaching—he’s shaping futures. His journey from service to the classroom is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and the lasting impact of giving back.
