Germanna’s free STEM workshops for local high school students return this fall as part of the College’s annual Makerspace series. Led by Dr. Harry Schoeller, chair of Germanna’s Engineering and Engineering Technology programs, and facilitated by work-study engineering students, the workshops offer participants the chance to explore cutting-edge tools and technology through hands-on learning experiences that build real-world STEM skills.
In partnership with the National Science Foundation, Germanna’s Makerspace provides a collaborative environment for learning and innovation. The program empowers young learners to gain the technical knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in today’s rapidly evolving workforce.
“With the rapid growth of automation and advanced manufacturing, we’re committed to equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in high-demand technical careers,” said Dr. Schoeller.
Since its launch in 2023, the Germanna Makerspace has hosted eleven free workshops, with two more planned for this fall and two in spring 2026. A STEM camp is also planned for the summer of 2026.
This year’s lineup includes a Basic Hand Soldering workshop, where students will learn the fundamentals of electronics assembly and repair, beginner soldering techniques, and how these skills apply in real-world settings. Participants can also attend Introduction to Computer-Aided Design and 3D Printing, an immersive session where digital ideas are brought to life as tangible creations.
All workshops take place in Germanna’s state-of-the-art engineering lab at the Fredericksburg Area Campus.
