Germanna Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Alpha Lambda Psi, received a slew of awards recently at the Phi Theta Kappa, Virginia/West Virginia Regional Conference held in Springfield.
The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (ΦΘΚ or PTK) is the international honor society for students attending open-access institutions and seeking associate degrees.
The GCC chapter earned an award for Most Distinguished Chapter for the Virginia/West Virginia Region. “Most Distinguished Chapter is a big deal,” said Germanna PTK chapter advisor Samantha Sharkey, “and it’s a testament to the officer team’s hard work throughout the year to stay engaged and work together in a virtual environment. I’m incredibly impressed with them.”
The GCC PTK chapter also won the first-place award for an Honors in Action paper entitled “Mental Health and Chronic Illness: Creating a More Accepting Future Through Awareness and Education.” The authors were Eli Jones, Kimberly Frisbee, Savannah Anderson, and Shamari Paige. Frisbee accepted the award for First Place – Honors in Action Project Award.

Taneisha Pittman (VP of Membership) and Kimberly Frisbee (VP of Fellowship) accepted the award for Most Distinguished Chapter for the Virginia/West Virginia Region on behalf of the chapter.
The GCC chapter was also recognized for reaching the Five Star Level in the Five Star Chapter Plan.
Chapter advisors for 2021 were Sharkey, Christine Chester, Grace Cellucci, and Dean Pam Frederick.
