Germanna’s Office of Equity Advancement was proud to host its first summer academy for the Academic Scholars Institute (ASI) from June 20 – June 23.
The Academic Scholars Institute is an Orange County-based program for young African American men that gives them the tools to becoming a successful scholar. ASI is modeled after Vanderbilt University professor Dr. Gilman Whiting’s Scholar Identity Model, created to assist schools and communities in providing ways to address and combat academic apathy in black and brown young men.
Since ASI’s inception in Orange County, the program has been held annually on the University of Virginia’s campus, giving participants an inside look into what it’s like to be a college student at a four-year university. This year, ASI expanded its cohort to Germanna, introducing the idea of community college to participants and allowing them to learn about the College’s offerings.
During Germanna’s ASI+ Summer Academy Program, the Equity Advancement team engaged over 30 young men in different academic workshops and activities to get them excited and interested in pursuing a college education.
