Among the evening’s highlights was an inspiring address from student speaker LaRai Diamond-Fortune, who shared her powerful journey of resilience and purpose.

I returned to school after nearly two decades away. My first research assignment was a D — I almost quit. But a professor reminded me, ‘You’ve been out of school for years. Don’t give up.’ And I didn’t. My joy for learning was reignited. I finally allowed myself to be the person I always wanted to be. I took many detours, but I made it back to the main road.

Diamond-Fortune, born in Bay Shore, N.Y., and raised in Spotsylvania, earned an Associate of Applied Science in criminal justice with a focus on probation, parole and systemic reform. Through her work-study experience and active leadership in Germanna’s Criminal Justice Club, she supported justice-involved individuals and advanced civic engagement and second-chance advocacy.

Don’t fear change. If your career path isn’t right, go back to school — it’s never too late. Don’t compete with others; what is for you is for you. Compete only with yourself. And never stop learning — education doesn’t end in the classroom; it continues in life.

Looking ahead, Diamond-Fortune plans to attend law school to further her commitment to systemic reform and to empower justice-involved individuals through ethical leadership and creative outreach.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for hundreds of graduates and their families — many of whom are the first in their families to attend or complete college. In his remarks to the graduates, Interim President Dr. Van Wilson shared a message of pride and encouragement:

I offer my heartfelt congratulations to each of you. Your hard work, resilience and determination have brought you to this moment, and we could not be prouder. May your future be filled with success and fulfillment.
